- In personal communication with the director of the Market 5 Gallery (the organization which runs the North Hall of Eastern Market), we've been told that the building is ready to hold its first official post-fire event, which will be a night of tango dancing this coming Thursday, May 3rd sponsored by Tango Buddha Productions. He also mentioned that Seventh Street SE between Pennsylvania and North Carolina Avenues will be closed to all vehicular traffic on weekends until further notice; we're awaiting some sort of official confirmation of this.
- From Voice of the Hill comes news of a new group, the Save Our Market Community Action Group, which aims to be more of an ad-hoc organization of people who are interested in helping but who aren't members of any of the more established Capitol Hill community organizations. The group aims to help with such things as distributing flyers, raising awareness of public meetings, and the like.
- I'm not sure how we missed it a few days ago, but over at Metroblogging DC, Tiffany Baxendell Bridge posted a nice bit of research into the exact historic status of Eastern Market. The executive summary is that while a lot of news pieces have reported that the Market is a historic landmark, it's not -- rather, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a subtle but important difference.
- Weblogger Samuel Fromartz has a nice post about the meaning of Eastern Market, both to himself and to the neighborhood.
- The folks behind EasternMarket.net are starting to use their semiregular newsletter to disseminate information about vendor, exhibitor, and flea market plans; it's definitely worth subscribing.
